Biotechnology-The future!!
Biotechnology! Sounds like a very heavy scientific process developed by the modern man. But let me assure you, I shall not be wrong in saying that Biotechnology was one of the most primitive and perhaps the first scientific process developed by the human race, though you may argue it may have been unknowingly.
Man has always been in search of betterment in all his avenues: be it food, shelter, transport and commerce. One may ask if biotechnology is one of the most ancient sciences. Why such hype is created today, when thousands of years of human evolution have passed? The reason is obvious, every new discovery in any field whether science, mathematics, engineering will draw its importance depending upon the age in which it is discovered as well as how well is it backed by the world political situation. I shall not refrain from quoting the example of the inventions of pagers by the American in the 19th century, the need and success of which aroused only in the 21st century.
In the earlier days or I may say age, what is today biotechnology was simple biology. Then came the challenge of some life threatening diseases and insoluble problems to the mankind. This is around the mid 20th century when an American minister of health quoted, “What we have before us are some breathtaking opportunities disguised as some insoluble problems."Biotechnology deals with understanding the science that deals with natural in heritage of properties from the earlier generations. Biotechnology deals with agriculture, animals and humans.

It is not very long ago when our own Dr.Cheema Sahebi an agricultural scientists modified the seeds of grapes and was able to grow seedless grapes, which we all relish today. Thanks to him! What he has done is biotechnology in relation to agriculture. Some of us would have read the startling news in the newspaper such as: black roses grown; tubular potatoes grown; square/cubical watermelons grown...all these things have been possible due to the success of man in agricultural biotechnology. Thank god! This time man has done scientific work in the constructive /functional directional. As every scientific research and discovery is always done with good intentions, however there is always a threat for it being used for destructive purposes knowingly or unknowingly. For this purpose every developed country has formed their own National research Council and Committee which defines the science based concerns associates with products of animals, agriculture and human biotechnology.
Rarely in the modern history of humans, has biology played such an important role in human affairs as it does today. In the 18th century, explorers stimulated the 1st major advance in biology in bringing back countless new species that Darwin and others put into a logical order based on the theory of natural selection-the development of evolutionary thinking and clarification of the rules for targeted artificial selection-an essential component of progress in biology and agriculture
Not long ago it was common for us to hear about inheritance of certain human qualities or diseases within specified groups of people. Today our scientists have been successful in identifying the genetic disorders which let to these and how we can deal with it. How would one feel if you told a family of dwarfs that it will be possible for doctors to work in the directions so that the next child will be the one with normal height or a person with an above average height? Can u imagine what good it will do to human kind, if scientists will be successful in modifying the human genes in such a way that no virus or bacteria will ever be able to attack any of the human races? The earth will be swept clean of major life threatening diseases like diphtheria, cholera, polio, tuberculosis and AIDS. Let me tell you that some of the scientists have been successful in achieving wide array of human developmental researches staring from artificially developing the human embryo outside the human body to rewiring the human brain to treat human disabilities.
We are not very far away from the age in which the human organs will be available from biotech factories and will cater to the human suffering from diseased/mutilated parts etc. What we have in store for our future generations are one of the most unimaginative possibilities of present date, or may sound like a scene taken directly from one of the science fiction movies. One may not agree immediately, but let me tell you, today where biotechnology stands ,it looks like the first few steps in creating an entire artificially human and understanding life forms that we are in search of in the outer space.
Man has always been inspired by his own thoughts in progressing for himself and his future generations. When we look back at what man has achieved so far in biotechnology, it looks like he has drawn lot of inspiration from our mythology and foke-lore.Didn't our grandmother tell us about how kind god was in giving sight to his blind disciple, haven’t we heard of the sweet leaves of the neem trees at Shirdi.
Believe me, Biotechnology is taking the world through such a phase which will always be remembered by the future genrations.Incidently, today the world is well connected and whatever outcome of the biotechnology researchers will be passed on to the common man without any delay. Due to the sudden urgency felt by man in eradicating all the natural obstacles in the way of his wellbeing and the same being commercially viable has been biotechnology of the most waited business of the future.
